What cause the Harlem Riot of 1935?

Hello my name is Oscar Bermejo. I'm currently a student at LaGuardia Community College. This semester I'm currently enrolled in ENN195:Violence in American Art and Culture. This week blog is about "What cause the 1935 Harlem Riot. The 1935 Harlem Riot first started off when a little boy got caught for a minor case of shoplifting. In the meanwhile someone saw what has taken place and started to spread a rumor about it the child was beaten to death. People gather around the place but because of the simple rumor that was spread and the hearse that had happen to be parked around the same place where the allege beating of the kid to death had taken place.I guess that was the breaking point where they had enough of the brutality against their community and decide to riot against the stores. They were also probably fed up with the amount of people that were unemployed in this specific area, the prices of goods they couldn't afford and when they committed this crime, they said that this was the finally straw against them. Also how the rumor was spread and the truth not being out could have prevented the riot but this could have been an outlet for all the time they were feeling oppressed.

Looking back

The blog assignment for this week is to look over any discussion or text that we have encounter during class and reflect on it.
I will be reflecting back on Caesar's Column by Ignatius Donnelly. Well I'm not really going to reflect on the book it self but the themes that we have discuss during the class when we were reading the book. One of the major theme that I really enjoy and keep thinking about is Social Darwinism. The fact what I like about the discuss ion is that it blew my mind about Social Darwinism on what I thought it was a fight against the bigger foe. What I use to think was that the lower class are only going to attack the upper class but what the reality was they also attack the lower class, which was attacking themselves. Usually when something broke out, such as a riot ,they would call in the police or the militia to suppress the riot. The police or militia isn't the upper class but working class themselves that trying to step over the lower class but which are people in the same class. The police force or militia are like any other working class person, they are on a job, trying to provide for their family, trying to do what ever it takes to keep their job, and to keep their family away from hunger or being homeless. This really makes me think about all the riots that have happened or will happen , that it just a clash between the working class or among themselves. Rarely you will see a rich person or a person of higher class that  would be on the streets rioting with other rich people to suppress the lower class that are going against them. This really grabs my attention because when the people went to riot for change, weren't they just hurting people that were in the same position as them?

Secret Society

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! My name is Oscar Bermejo and I'm currently a student who is currently enrolled at LaGuardia Community College. This semester one of the class I currently enrolled in is Violence in American Art and Culture or better known at the college as ENN195, who is currently being taught by the professor Dr. Justin Rogers-Cooper this semester.

One of the themes  I decided to select that we were discussing during class was about the "Secert Society" that is shown through Caesar's Column. One of the passages I decide to choose about the secret society is "You have no idea," said Andrew,"the difficulty of obtaining information. It is a terrible organization. I do not think that anything like it has existed before on the earth...This organization he continued is called The Brotherhood of Destruction. It extends all over Europe and America, and numbers, I am told, one hundred million members. Can it be possible asked one gentleman , in astonishment?".(page 96-97)This passage really shows about how this secret society ,is keeping there organization to a secret. The people from the top had to send a spy in hope to get information about the people that are going to rebel against them. Even if the spy was among their ranks of the Brotherhood, he still couldn't lots of info about the people that were in it that were in demand.Even came down to one of the leaders were surprise to find out something like this existed in their society. There the reason on why it called a secret society, that it doesn't  have to catch the attention of the people that they are going to go against. "I will blindfold you-- not that I mistrust you,but that I have to satisfy the laws of our society and scruples of others...Every man present wore a black mask and a long cloak of dark material."(page 113-115) There are a couple of things that you must give up in order to be in society and there are rules that you must follow or there will be consequences. This organization has set a couple of ground rules, they also have tried there best attempted to keep them in secrets in order to succeed in there mission , so other organization can pick them off one by one. There hidden tactics and not making them know  are ways to make it sound that this secret organization is a made up story to scare them so it doesn't alarm there enemy. They had to send people in to find out if this place exists, only way to find that is by going inside the organization and they don't take kind to spies or anyone that betrays them. I believe that this is sort of relate to our society, where there are certain things that you can do to be in, but once you in it, you can't talk about the security society to the public or they will have to take you out .One example could be such as the Illuminati ( don't say it true but anything is possible) where they are secretly in power taking control of people and power in the shadow  or once you get into this society you have everything you want but once you don't obey what they tell you to do, they eliminate you. Nobody really knows that these secret society exist, but there are things that go around stating that it true, such like Brotherhood in the story.

Caesar's Column

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! My name is Oscar Bermejo and I'm currently a student who is currently enrolled at LaGuardia Community College. This semester one of the class I currently enrolled in is Violence in American Art and Culture or better known at the college as ENN195, who is currently being taught by the professor Dr. Justin Rogers-Cooper this semester.

Today blog will be focusing on passage from Caesar's Column by Ignatius Donnelly and reflect on it. The quote I reflect on is "that money ruled everything in this great country" (Donnelly pg 26). In the book Gabriel helps defend Maximilian against Prince Cabano from getting whipped as Gabriel snatches the whip from the prince and flees the scene. Later in the newspaper there is an announcement where the Prince Cabano frauds Gabriel of his kind act of helping Maximiliam and tell everyone the cruel lie of what he actually did that never took place. Sometime to media can be a lie, you don't have to believe everything they say because there is always someone behind it all that are willing to pay big bucks to make them self look innocent ,while the other person look guilty. In a sense I do see this being applied in our society today and this being true somewhat. It is usually the elite or the people in office that have power that are usually wealthy. Also when people of high social status or people that have money get in trouble with the law, they usually suffer less of a consequence or usually can buy there way out. Also when let say celebrities or other people with power get in trouble with drugs addiction or in possession of drugs, they sometime are put into rehab to get "better", while someone of a lower class are automatically sentence to serve years in prison. I'm not saying this is the case for all people but it look like people with money have some sort of privilege in this society that runs on money.

In this class the themes we will be looking into are violence that happen through American History and the changes that took place when these sorts of act of violence occurred.

"The Civilization of years can be overthrown in almost any human being in a few days. In a little time we return to our real nature". What I believe this quote is trying to say is that when a person is introduce to a new environment or new to place that they have never been in before, they most likely
lose their sense of being a normal person and be consumed by fear and terror of this unknown place that they haven't visit. How the story uses the quote, they would think similar to a wild beast in the wild, who is afraid of human kind and seem to wonder endlessly without an exact destination. Since the woman is trying to help her to go a right way, the girl is terrified similar as a wild animal in the wilderness when encounter with a human , so she runs off exactly what a animal from the wilderness would do, either run away in a fear or attack back."The girl pushed on confused, frightened, lost in the wild of civilization...To one who, familiar only with woods, wilds, the face of nature..." Any person can become consumed by fear or turn into a "wild" person if they are being introduce to a new environment without the help of someone they know that could guide them through the new area they are visiting. They don't know what these strangers could possibly do to you, the massive amount of people that are walking around and the new setting that you have to get use to all at the same time could be a lot to a person mental state. Also I think that there is people that look for person such as this girl, that are confuse in this big city and see them as easy targets to manipulate them for person usage or advantages.

In this class the themes we will be looking into are violence that happen through American History and the changes that took place when these sorts of act of violence occurred during history.

For this week reading we had to complete "The Railroad Riot of 1877" which talked about the rioters that were targeting the railroad company all around the country such as in place in West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania which could of been caused of the unfair wages and the terrible working conditions that the workers had been through.A possible reason of why the strikes turned into big sparks of riots across the country could be the fail negotiation with the railroad company and the unions. In this reading and in the class discussion we realize that  the author Headley kept contradicting himself varies of times through the reading and the other reading of "Flour riot of 1877".In the previous reading he said that violence is justified when the people were suffering and the government wasn't there to help while the majority suffered. While in this reading , the people were suffering because the pay was to low, lot of people lost their jobs, without their jobs they couldn't feed their family, and the companies were just getting rid of people just to fill the spot with other person that was desperate to work to take care of their starving family for low wage. But when they went on a riot, their actions weren't justified because they were committing a big crime against them but the railroad company was also committing a crime but it wasn't as big as the one the rioter were committing. The rioter crimes were put on the spotlight while the companies crimes committed were treated as lesser crime or not even view as a crime. Do you think that economic status of a person played a role when viewing the crimes were being committed or was their even crimes committed by the companies? Should of the rioters have waited until the railroad company's and the workers came to an agreement or was the rioting justifiable because they believed if they didn't act there wouldn't be any changes?
